Construction on the first mixed-use building to include a Costco began in Los Angeles on Wednesday (September 18), the New York Post reports.
The upcoming development will be located at 5035 Coliseum Street in Baldwin Village and include a "state-of-the-art" Costco superstore as its anchor retail tenant, according to its developer Thrive Living, which said the store would offer locals “fresh produce and healthy food options, as well as optical services, a pharmacy, and delivery services to support the needs of local businesses" in a press release.
The store will be on the street level below an apartment complex with 800 units on the upper floors. Additionally, a total of 184 units, which will account for 23% of the apartment complex, will go to low-incoming households, while the rest will be offered as non-subsidized affordable and workforce housing, according to Thrive Living.
The project is the first under AB 2011 in Los Angeles, a California bill that became effective on July 1, 2023, and "allows a streamlined ministerial approval process for eligible residential developments in certain commercial zones," according to Los Angeles City Planning. Thrive Living and Costco previously announced plans to hire residents and offer a job training program for open positions last year and the developer expects thousands of construction jobs within the community.
